Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hopes for a “comprehensive strategic partnership” with Saudi Arabia following a congratulatory call from Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman on his re-election.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Sharif stated, “Grateful for the telephone call from His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on my re-election.” He conveyed his wishes for the health and well-being of the Custodian of Two Holy Mosques, His Majesty King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, and expressed eagerness to work closely with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to elevate the historic Pakistan-Saudi Arabia ties into a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Crown Prince Salman called to congratulate PM Sharif on his assumption of office and had previously extended his greetings upon Mr. Sharif’s election as prime minister.
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan share a longstanding relationship based on mutual economic interests, strategic military cooperation, and a shared Islamic heritage. This relationship includes economic assistance, energy supplies, and military collaboration, with Saudi Arabia being a significant source of financial aid and oil for Pakistan.
The military aspect of their relationship includes defense cooperation, training, and joint exercises, while their partnership has expanded into strategic ties, encompassing not just economic and military dimensions but also diplomatic and regional security interests.
During the call, PM Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s pride in its deep-rooted ties with Saudi Arabia and praised Saudi Arabia for its unwavering commitment and support. His aspiration for a comprehensive strategic partnership likely signifies a desire to deepen economic ties through increased Saudi investment in Pakistan, particularly in sectors crucial for Pakistan’s economic recovery and growth.
The envisioned partnership could also involve closer collaboration in regional security initiatives, counterterrorism efforts, and political support on issues affecting the Muslim world. PM Sharif also extended an invitation to the Saudi crown prince to undertake an official visit to Pakistan.
