Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the stone-laying ceremony for Nestlé Pakistan’s Biomass Steam Plant in Sheikhupura, marking a major step toward sustainable industrial development and renewable energy.

Nestlé Pakistan’s leadership, including CEO and Managing Director Jason Avanceña, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Sheikh Waqar Ahmad, and Head of Technical Faisal Nadeem, attended the ceremony. The project supports Nestlé’s global target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
USD 4.5 Million Investment
Nestlé Pakistan is investing USD 4.5 million in the Biomass Steam Plant. Moreover, the project forms part of the company’s broader sustainability strategy and its PKR 17 billion (USD 60 million) investment commitment for Pakistan between 2026 and 2028, announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Once operational, the facility will produce 30 tons of steam per hour by using agricultural waste instead of fossil fuels. As a result, the plant will provide a cleaner and more sustainable energy source for manufacturing operations.
Supporting Climate Goals
Addressing the ceremony, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif praised Nestlé Pakistan for promoting renewable energy and environmental sustainability. She said the project supports Punjab’s priorities of cleaner air, environmental protection, and sustainable industrial growth.
She added that initiatives like the Biomass Steam Plant strengthen Pakistan’s circular economy and help industries adopt responsible environmental practices.
Reducing Carbon Emissions
Jason Avanceña said the Sheikhupura project marks an important milestone in Nestlé Pakistan’s sustainability journey.
He explained that the plant will use nearly 72,000 tons of agricultural residue each year. Consequently, it will reduce about 24,345 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. In addition, the project is expected to save nearly USD 2.15 million in annual fuel costs while encouraging more sustainable farming practices.
Public-Private Collaboration
Sheikh Waqar Ahmad said the Biomass Steam Plant demonstrates how public-private partnerships can accelerate Pakistan’s transition to cleaner energy.
He added that the project reduces dependence on fossil fuels while creating productive use for agricultural residue. Furthermore, it supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on affordable clean energy and climate action.
Nestlé Pakistan said it will continue investing in sustainable manufacturing, renewable energy, and community development while supporting Pakistan’s environmental and climate objectives.
