The National Assembly has passed a bill to amend the Election Act 2017. During the National Assembly session, the amendments of the previous government regarding electronic voting machine and voting of overseas Pakistanis were scrapped.
Prime Minister Nazir Tarar introduced a bill to further amend the National Accountability Ordinance 1999.
Federal Minister for Law Nazir Tarar, while addressing a meeting of the National Assembly, said that it was not possible to hold elections on the same day across the country through the voting machine. The government did not take the parties into confidence on the machine.
He added that the bill was passed by bulldozing the rules.
It may be recalled that in November last year, a joint sitting of Parliament passed an amendment bill to use Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) for voting in elections despite opposition objections and walkouts.
Under the bill, two amendments were made to the Election Act of 2017, which dealt with the use of electronic voting machines and the right of Pakistanis living abroad to vote via the Internet.
Opposition members walked out of the house after the bill was passed.
