Accredited with delivering back-to-back chart toppers but more importantly hailed as an inspiration to female musicians in Pakistan, Momina Mustehsan is the latest EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador lighting up Spotify’s digital billboard at Times Square, New York City.
Momina is a symbol of pride for Pakistan that needs no introduction. And as she lit up one of the most iconic spots in the world, she made sure to drive a hearty message home for the country. She took her time to reflect global attention towards climate change and how it is a pressing challenge that the world faces today. “Today it is Pakistan. Tomorrow it could be your country #ClimateEmergency” read her message to the world.
With her feature, Momina joins a select group of figureheads representing the rising stature of women musicians in the country. Being an activist at heart, she also personifies how this stage can serve to highlight more than just one issue with her message for climate change giving a profound example.
“I think we all owe it to everyone that is impacted by this climate emergency. A third of the country is underwater and it’s not because of our greenhouse emissions. It is because of our geography that we suffer the worst consequences of climate change. And as a global community, now more than ever, we need to get together and figure out how we can make our carbon footprint smaller,” said Momina, in support of her standing with respect to what Pakistan and the world is facing due to rapid global warming.
Momina’s appearance on the billboard coincides with her participation on the first episode of Spotify Talks titled ‘Women in Music’. The icon and role model for aspiring Pakistani women creators rose to fame after performing a rendition of the legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Afreen Afreen’ song along with his nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and stirred listeners worldwide, from the UK to Canada to the US. This month through the EQUAL program, Momina’s track, “Tera Woh Pyar (Nawazishein Karam)” from Coke Studio Season 09, has been spotlighted on the EQUAL Pakistan playlist and EQUAL global. To listen to Momina talk about her journey as a woman in music and climate change, tune in to the first episode of Spotify Talks at 4:00 pm PKT on Monday, September 26.
