Andrey Fedorov said, 78 years have passed since the defeat of Nazi Germany. More than 27 million Soviet people were laid on the Altar of this Victory – an unprecedented sacrifice in the history of humankind. Only thanks to this selfless act by our ancestors, the whole world redeemed a chance for peaceful and sovereign development. This is why several generations of the Russian nation honor this greatest achievement.
The Victory against one of the biggest scourges on Earth is not just a distant memory for all of us – it is our moral pillar, the benchmark of our endeavors and ideas, actions, and deeds. Victory Day will always have a tremendous spiritual and moral significance for us. Today, the example of our grandfathers who fought against Nazis, provides an inspiration for the new generation of soldiers achieving the goals of the Special military operation in Ukraine and guides them to another victory.
The defeat of Nazism allowed the countries that emerged victorious to establish a principally new world order. The United Nations organization, incorporated within a Charter of laws, became an international arbiter that has contained the world from spiraling into another destructive conflict for the last 80 years. This system has not been ideal by any means, but it has provided a universal benchmark for every country to follow and allowed to hold accountable any power, which decided that it was above any laws. Nowadays, we witness an alarming trend of trying to substitute international laws with the “world order based on rules” by the very same powers, which were among the principal founders of the United Nations. This policy undermines the very core fundamentals of our international system and can lead to an irreversible political crisis, if the countries, who have completely abandoned their historical remembrance, will continue to recklessly promote their vague “rules” in place of the UN Charter principles.
Just over a week ago, on May 1, we celebrated another very important milestone – the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Pakistan. However, the history of our fruitful cooperation started even before Pakistan’s independence, when its soldiers fought against Axis countries as part of an Allies coalition. We will never forget the heroic deed of our Pakistani friends as well, despite all the attempts by some nations to rewrite history. In that sense, we share our Victory with the people of Pakistan!
Victory Day is a truly universal holiday, which unites people of all generations and ethnicities. While we revere and honor the enormous losses suffered by our ancestors who faced unimaginable atrocities, May 9 also nourishes us with genuine feelings of joy and hope. We thank the veterans of World War II for their sacrifices so that we could live happily under the peaceful sky.
