To promote healthy, clean and green environment, a group of cyclists called “GG Riders” in collaboration with “Green City Plantation” organized a family leisure cycling ride followed by a “100 Tree” plantation drive at Azad Cricket Academy, Model Colony Karachi. The event was held on the morning of Sunday, 16th December, 2018 and the chief guest for the event was former Pakistani test cricketer Saeed Azad who is also the custodian of the Quaid-e-Azam Cricket Ground and runs a cricket training academy on the groud.
GG Riders is a cycling group that promotes cycling and healthy activities in the areas of Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Johar and regularly organizes cycle group rides on Saturday and Sunday. GG Riders have collectively more than 500 cyclist members and their family leisure rides have more than 50 participants every Sunday. On this cycling ride followed by a plantation drive, the participants of the event pedaled for 25 kilometers from Askari IV to Model Colony and back. More than 45 cyclists and over 70 cricket academy students participated and collectively they all planted over 100 trees. The cyclists and families were happy and showed much interests in participating again in such healthy activities.
Green City Plantation, supported the plantation drive by providing over 100 trees that were selectively chosen by qualified botanist. Environment friendly plants were carefully selected based on their overall health, height and success rate in Karachi. Green City Plantation has carried several plantations drives in Karachi and so far have planted more than 1200 trees in areas including Shan Park, Saeedabad HQ, Safari Park, Abdullah Darvesh Park and several other schools and localities.
On this auspicious occasion Mr. Saeed Azad said that it is very encouraging for the children from the cricket academy to see their ground being greener again. He emphasized that it is responsibility of every citizen to plant trees in their surrounding areas, especially in protected facilities like play grounds, parks and communities so that over all environmental condition of the city gets better.
Saeed Azad later on thanked the participants, contributors, supporters and donors who participated in the event.
