Bollywood’s Leading Actresses Are Choosing Selective Roles Over Constant Screen Time

Bollywood’s leading actresses are choosing selective projects as their careers evolve.
For decades, Bollywood expected leading actresses to stay constantly visible. However, that approach is changing.
Several major stars now choose projects more carefully. Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif have all reduced their film output.
According to Variety, the change reflects a wider shift in how established actresses approach their careers. They no longer need to appear in several films each year to maintain their relevance.
Meanwhile, younger stars are filling the gap. Janhvi Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Rashmika Mandanna, Ananya Panday and Triptii Dimri continue to take on more projects.
Established Stars Are Choosing Carefully
The change does not necessarily mean these actresses have lost interest in cinema. Instead, their priorities have evolved.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas last appeared in a Hindi film with The Sky Is Pink. Anushka Sharma’s last major film appearance came in Zero.
Katrina Kaif most recently appeared in Merry Christmas. Kareena Kapoor Khan, meanwhile, has combined films such as Jaane Jaan and Singham Again with other professional commitments.
For years, actresses followed demanding schedules. They often moved from one production to another with little time between projects.
Today, however, established stars have more freedom. They can decide when to work and which roles deserve their time.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan helped demonstrate that approach earlier. She stepped away from the traditional pace of mainstream cinema while retaining her popularity.
Now, other leading actresses appear to be following a similar path.
Business Creates New Career Opportunities
Another major factor is the growth of opportunities outside films.
Several established actresses have built businesses and investment portfolios alongside their acting careers. As a result, cinema is no longer their only source of professional growth.
Katrina Kaif has developed her beauty business into a major venture. Deepika Padukone has also expanded her interests through investments and entrepreneurship.
Similarly, Alia Bhatt has entered the consumer market with her children’s clothing brand.

Therefore, the role of a Bollywood star has changed. Actresses are not simply promoting products anymore.
Instead, many now act as founders, investors and entrepreneurs. Their celebrity status can support several businesses at the same time.
OTT Has Changed the Meaning of Success
Streaming platforms have also transformed the industry.
In the past, theatrical success largely determined an actress’s commercial standing. Today, however, OTT platforms offer another route to audiences.
Streaming services have created space for darker and more unconventional roles. They have also allowed established actresses to explore characters that may not fit traditional Bollywood formulas.
Priyanka has expanded her international career through projects such as Citadel and The Bluff. Kareena also reached a wider audience through the streaming thriller Jaane Jaan.
Alia Bhatt, meanwhile, explored different territory with Darlings. She also made her international debut with Heart of Stone.
Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia told Variety that audiences still want to see these stars on screen. However, he argued that filmmakers must offer stronger roles.
“These are top billing actresses who are extremely popular,” Dholakia said. He added that better writing could encourage them to return more frequently.
Stronger Female Roles Remain Important
The changing film market has created another challenge.
Large-scale action films continue to dominate the box office. Consequently, substantial roles for women can become harder to find.
Filmmaker Mudassar Aziz criticised this trend. He referred to films such as Pushpa and Animal while discussing the changing preferences of audiences.
Aziz described the shift as a “tectonic shift”. He also argued that the quality of female characters remains an important issue.
At the same time, filmmaker Suparn Verma highlighted another development. OTT platforms no longer carry the stigma of being a lesser option for established actors.
“Actresses are being paid as per status,” Verma told Variety. “It is not a step down in terms of money.”
Younger Actresses Move Into the Spotlight
As established stars reduce their film schedules, younger actresses have gained more opportunities.
Janhvi Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Rashmika Mandanna, Ananya Panday and Triptii Dimri remain active across films and streaming projects.
Their busy schedules give them greater visibility. Moreover, the changing industry gives younger performers more opportunities to build their own audiences.
Exhibitor and distributor Akkshaye Rathie told Variety that personal choice also plays a major role.
Stars such as Kareena Kapoor Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have spent decades building their careers. Therefore, they can afford to slow down without losing their star power.
Bollywood’s Definition of Stardom Is Changing
The economics of celebrity have changed significantly.
A film can demand months of preparation, shooting and promotion. Yet an actress may appear in only a small number of releases each year.
Outside cinema, major celebrities can promote brands, invest in companies and build businesses. They can also take part in events and other commercial opportunities.
As a result, films are no longer the only measure of success.
Bollywood’s leading actresses are not necessarily leaving cinema behind. Instead, they are gaining greater control over their careers.
Their choices reflect a broader change in the industry. Today, a successful actress can build influence through films, streaming, entrepreneurship and investments.
Cinema remains important. However, it now forms only one part of a much larger career.
