Some personalities are multi-faceted. It is not easy to judge their art. Dr. Anwar Sajjad was one of them. He was also a medical doctor and a novelist. He also wrote TV dramas and created novels. He was also an artist and is said to have been aware of the mysteries of dance.
Born on May 27, 1935 in Lahore, Dr. Anwar Sajjad was a student of FC College in the 1950s. He did his MBBS from King Edward Medical College and ran the clinic for a while. In his college days, he was the secretary general of the union. He was also the editor of a college journal. He has always been proud to be the editor of this magazine. It was a journal whose editor was Krishna Chandra and many famous writers of the subcontinent. Once he was asked if he would like to be a student again, he replied that I am still a student.
Dr. Anwar Sajjad started writing in 1950. He was influenced by many writers but he was most impressed by Saadat Hassan Manto. He never claimed to be an expert in any field, but insisted that he worked hard in whatever field he ventured into, with positive results. Dr. Anwar Sajjad excelled in symbolic and metaphorical fiction. They found a unique place in this field. His legendary collection “Metaphors” is a living example of this. His timeless myths include “Knopf, Cardiac Asthma, Cactus, Cinderella” and many more. Dr. Anwar Sajjad belonged to this tribe of fiction writers including Bilraj Menra, Surinder Prakash, Rasheed Amjad, Sami Ahuja, Mazharul Islam, and Manshayad. He is one of the founders of modern Urdu fiction. He did not write direct communication fiction but his fiction technique was different And the reader has to work a little harder to understand them. His books include “Metaphors, Crossroads, Birth, Garden of Happiness and Blue Notebook”.
Dr. Anwar Sajjad was a progressive writer and his ideas are reflected in his writings. In 1989 he was awarded the “Pride of Performance”. In addition, he was given many other awards.
Dr. Anwar Sajjad also wrote several TV dramas and made a name for himself as a playwright. His long-running dramas were especially popular. One of his telefilms “Zikr Hai Ek Sal Ka” was also very much liked. His TV dramas “Picnic, Late Night, Coil, Saba and the Sea and This Land Is Mine” are particularly noteworthy. Dr. Anwar Sajjad was also an excellent actor, who also acted in many TV dramas. He was nominated for the State TV Award for his outstanding performance in “Saba Aur Samandar”. One of his drama series “Yellow Afternoon” also became very popular. Shujaat Hashmi also played a memorable role in this series. The drama series aired on state TV in the 90’s. He was also the chairman of Pakistan Arts Council Lahore. In 1977, he also participated in political activities for a short time. He used to address PPP meetings. Dr. Anwar Sajjad was a kind and compassionate man. He treated the needy patients free of cost in his clinic. He was a very good medical doctor. His father Dr. Dilawar was also a local celebrity. Sometimes the mind is stunned to think that a human being can possess so many dimensions. He was very intelligent and well read. Where such multifaceted people are born every day. Dr. Anwar Sajjad passed away on June 6, 2019 at the age of 84. His third anniversary was celebrated yesterday. It is certain that he will live forever, no matter how hard he works.
