PIA Privatisation Marked at PSX as Rs135bn Deal Signals Major Economic Reform

PSX hosts a Gong Ceremony celebrating the successful PIA privatisation.
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) hosted a Gong Ceremony to mark the successful privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), in a landmark transaction valued at Rs135 billion.
The ceremony was attended by Advisor to the Prime Minister on Privatisation and Chairman of the Privatisation Commission of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali, along with senior officials, business leaders and representatives of the country’s financial sector.
Among the prominent guests were Muhammad Ali Farid Khwaja, Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), businessman Arif Habib, AKD Group Chairman Aqeel Karim Dhedhi and PSX Chairman Ruhail Muhammad.
Senior representatives from the Pakistan Banks Association, Bank of Punjab, Central Depository Company, National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited and Pakistan Stock Brokers Association also attended the ceremony.
PIA Deal Marks Major Privatisation Milestone
The event highlighted the significance of the PIA privatisation as a major step in Pakistan’s economic reform programme.

The transaction represents the first major divestment of a state-owned enterprise in nearly two decades. It also reflects the government’s efforts to reduce the role of the state in commercially driven businesses and attract greater private-sector participation.
The deal attracted considerable investor interest. Bids reportedly reached approximately Rs250 billion ($900 million), substantially exceeding the final transaction value.
The strong bidding response indicates growing interest in Pakistan’s privatisation programme. It also signals renewed confidence among investors in the country’s economic reform agenda.
Financial Sector Welcomes Transaction
The presence of leading financial institutions, brokerage houses, banks and asset management companies underscored the wider significance of the transaction for Pakistan’s capital markets.
PSX officials said the ceremony represented more than the completion of a corporate transaction. It also marked an important moment for Pakistan’s broader economic reform process.
The successful completion of the PIA deal could encourage the government to accelerate the restructuring and privatisation of other state-owned enterprises.
Moreover, stronger private-sector participation could improve efficiency, attract investment and reduce the financial burden associated with loss-making public-sector entities.
The transaction therefore places PIA privatisation among the most closely watched developments in Pakistan’s ongoing economic reform programme.
