Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office after just three weeks in cinemas, marking a major milestone for the director and another strong sign of the post-pandemic recovery of theatrical moviegoing.
Released on July 17, the epic has earned approximately $429.65 million in the United States and $578.8 million internationally, taking its worldwide total beyond the billion-dollar threshold.
The achievement makes The Odyssey Nolan’s first film to pass $1 billion since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which finished its theatrical run with around $1.08 billion.
The film’s performance has been particularly strong on Imax screens. About $257 million of its global box-office earnings have come from Imax, with the movie expected to set a new record as the highest-grossing film ever released in the premium large-format network.
Shot specifically with Imax technology in mind, The Odyssey has benefited from audiences seeking a large-screen experience for Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.
With the film still playing in cinemas, its total is also expected to overtake The Dark Knight Rises and make The Odyssey the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career.
Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, was a major commercial success despite its serious historical subject matter, collecting approximately $975 million worldwide. The new epic has now moved past that figure and is continuing to build momentum.
The film’s next major opportunity comes with its release in China, one of the world’s largest theatrical markets. The movie is scheduled to open there on Friday, potentially adding significantly to its worldwide earnings.
Its Chinese release will include screenings on nearly 800 Imax screens, alongside thousands of conventional cinema screens, giving the film another substantial opportunity to expand its global total.

The milestone also places The Odyssey among a select group of films to achieve billion-dollar status in 2026.
It is the fifth film released this year to cross the threshold, following Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has earned around $1.18 billion and continues to rise, Toy Story 5 with approximately $1.067 billion, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with about $1.001 billion, and Michael, which has also reached roughly $1.001 billion.
Michael previously surpassed Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biographical film ever, adding another significant box-office milestone to an increasingly strong year for Hollywood.
The success of The Odyssey is also significant beyond Nolan’s personal box-office record. The film’s performance comes during an ongoing recovery for cinemas following the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
With five films already crossing $1 billion in 2026, the year has produced more billion-dollar theatrical releases than any other year since the pandemic.
However, the industry has yet to match the extraordinary performance of 2019. That year remains the record holder for billion-dollar films, with nine movies crossing the milestone.
For Nolan, however, The Odyssey represents a particularly important achievement. Its combination of a massive global audience, strong Imax performance and an upcoming China release means the film could continue climbing the box-office rankings in the weeks ahead.
If its momentum continues, the epic could not only become Nolan’s biggest commercial success but also further strengthen the case for large-scale theatrical filmmaking at a time when studios and audiences continue to reassess the future of cinema.
