KHAIRPUR – A Four-Day Workshop on Positive Disciplining, Classroom Management and Child Protection organized by the Department of Teacher Education in collaboration with Legal Rights Forum, Karachi and Save the Children was concluded at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur. Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto, Vice Chancellor, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur presided over the ceremony while Ms. Shamim Mumtaz, MPA & Chairperson, Sindh Child Protection Authority (SCPA) was the chief guest on this occasion.
Speaking on this occasion, Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto appreciated Save the Children’s support to inculcate content on positive disciplining in the teachers’ training curricula .He said that positive discipline techniques are not only about avoiding corporal punishment and respecting the basic rights of the child; it also provides an educational toolkit aiming at supporting children’s growth, giving them information, allowing them to develop their full potential, and preparing them to become happy, balanced and successful individuals.
Dr. Ibupoto said that when it comes to teachers in particular, it shows them how to achieve their teaching goals and help their students to handle difficult or challenging situations, while remaining calm, respectful and effectively managing their classroom. This is based on a set of principles that ensure a safe learning environment for children in schools.
Dr. Ibupoto said the students that you are talented persons and ambassador of the nation to eradicate social evils from the society because it is our moral obligation. He said credibility, determination and truth are the successful tools of the life. He also appreciated the endeavor of Ms. Shamim Mumtaz for the protection of child rights and also commended the efforts of Legal Rights Forum for organizing this result oriented workshop.
Ms. Shamim Mumtaz said the role of teachers in classroom management and positive discipline is important in making children behave well and cooperate and young teachers can play dynamic role in this regard. She said that the Government of Sindh is committed to take all possible measures to end violence and abuse against children in Sindh. She maintained that Sindh Child Protection Authority is working in 29 Districts of Sindh. The authority has every unit in each District. The Incharges are rendering their best services.
Ms. Shamim Mumtaz talked on the plight of the child abuse in Sindh, she quoted the two examples of sexual abuse at Panu Akil and Dadu where two innocent children were sexually abused and murdered. It is the need of the time for rigorous punishment against these elements, we have to save the children from home to street and other places, it is the need of the time to establish speedy courts for the protection of rights of the children.
She said we are committed to fight against beggary, child marriages, and child labor. We have established shelter rooms where the DNA test of children has been carried out. She said we must eradicate the domestic violence against children. She lauded the role of media for the protection of child rights in Sindh. She urged that human rights activists and religious scholars may play their due role for the eradication of child abuse in the society. She announced that a WhatsApp group will be created in which the complaints regarding child abuse will be reported.
Mr. Tahir Iqbal Malik, CEO Legal Rights Forum said in his address that the importance of positive discipline approach in making students behave well and cooperate is need of the hour. He said that positive disciplining is a teaching and parenting model that strikes a balance between two main considerations: effective teaching on the one hand, and respecting the rights of the child on the other hand.
Prof. Dr. Taj Muhammad Lashari, Dean, Faculty of Social Science, Ms. Tania Atzaz, Senior Program Coordinator, Save the Children Pakistan, Ms. Farzana Jabeen Khoso, Incharge Department of Teacher Education, Advocate Rahib Lakho and Mr. Sajjad Ali Lolai, Project Coordinator-LRF also spoke at the event.
Advocate Manzoor Hussain Larik, Dean Faculty of Law, Mr. Mureed Hussain Ibupoto, Registrar, Mr. Zahid Hussain Sahito, Incharge Department of Special Education, Mr. Syed Zahid Shah, Mr. Shoaib Safdar Ghuman, Assistant Prosecutor General Sindh, Ms. Firdous Bugti and large number of students attended the ceremony.
Earlier, painting exhibition was also held in the premises of the Faculty of Teacher Education. At the end, the shields and certificates were distributed.
