USAID Stabilization Program Activities in Merged Districts & KPK.

USAID, through its KP Reconstruction Program, supports the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s efforts to rebuild public infrastructure destroyed during the 2009 military operations against militants, and the 2010 flooding. The program is rebuilding facilities for education, health, water, sanitation, and irrigation. It also is working with the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to improve the capacity of government departments to deliver essential services.

Let’s get to know about some of the great examples of these huge development programs. Education is a key to eliminate gender in equality, reducing poverty, promoting health, bring in gsusta in ability and fostering peace in any region. Many districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province faced detriment a limp acts due to flood of year2010 followed by militancy conflicts Asaresult, the locals were left deprived from basic amenities for a period of nine years. With the idea to cope with prevailing circumstances and bring the community out of this critical situation, the Provincial Government with the support of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) initiated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Reconstruction Program (KPRP).

Government Primary School SherKhani No.1, Lower Dir:

District Lower Dir of Malakand Division suffered during flood of 2010 and war against terrorism. The flood of 20I0 has greatly damaged educational institutions in the region. As a result the local community has remained deprived for approximately eight years.

The older schools in the region were not weather resistant due to their design and standards. The students were not comfortable and remained exposed to extreme environmental conditions.

In order to restore peace and facilitate communities in terms of provision of quality education, the Provincial Government with the financial assistance from United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has started Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Reconstruction Program (KPRP). Government Primary School Sher Khani. No. 0I had received major damages due to 20I0 flood, therefore it has been rehabilitated and a state of the art building facility has now been completed.

During an interview with the school Head master Mr. Abdur   Razzaq expressed, “Previously we had no proper and sufficient classrooms to accommodate our students. Since the area has harsh weather particularly in winter, the students were prone to diseases. Due to which we had observed increase in general absenteeism and drop down in the enrolment. We had to allow our students to stay at homes during rainy seasons. Over all we had been through several challenges in one way or the other. After reconstruction of the dilapidated school, the whole community in general and the students & staff in particular are happy by having a state of the art educational facility.”

The new building is very attractive and has contributed much to the enrolment. Approximately 200 students were enrolled prior to construction, whereas at present, the enrolment has reached up to 280 and it is expected that the enrolment will be further increased with time. The Head master along with his team appreciated the efforts of Provincial Government and support of USAID.

Government Girls Middle School, Qayyumabad Swat

Government Girls Middle School Qayyumabad located in are mote area of District Swat also received massive damages during flood of 20I0. The school has been rehabilitated and is operational now. A state of the art building facility is visible from surrounding areas.

Miss Nazish Aziz. Head mistress shared her experience, “Both primary and middle sections are in the same premises. The primary section was formerly constructed and later the middle section under KPRP.”

However, local people are of the view that the newly constructed block is extraordinary, attracts students and ultimately contributing to the enrolment. Previously we had forty five students enrolled in them idle section while at present the number has reached to sixty and it is expected that the number shall rise in the coming years”.

Miss Nazish extended her thanks to Provincial Government and USAID for helping the marginalized community of QayyumAbad.

According to School head mistress, about 1000 individuals residing in 4 villages of the surrounding area are the direct beneficiaries of the project. These villages include Oghuz Kas, Serai Lalkoo, Bara Lalkoo and Kuzz Lalkoo.
