US President Donald Trump says US is looking to make a deal with Taliban to end nineteen years war in Afghanistan.
He made this statement in a tweet after meeting with top national security officials to review plans for withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.
The top officials in the meeting include Vice President Mike Pence, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, national security adviser John Bolton, Defense Secretary Mike Esper, Joint Chiefs chairman General Joseph Dunford and CIA Director Gina Haspel.
In a statement, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said after a meeting that United States remains committed to achieve a comprehensive peace agreement including reduction in violence and a ceasefire in Afghanistan.
About 14,000 U.S. troops remain engaged in Afghanistan to train Afghan security forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations against militant groups.
