Turin, Italy – A group of students from the University of Turin, representing a diverse range of academic disciplines and ages, along with individuals advocating for scientific progress, have launched an online petition urging Rector Geuna to preserve the university’s relationships with Israeli universities. They argue that these connections are vital for the academic and cultural development of both students and faculty members.
The petition comes in response to the recent decision by the Academic Senate not to participate in a joint research call between Italy and Israel, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While this move has raised concerns about the potential discontinuation of collaborations with Israeli institutions, Rector Geuna clarified in a recent interview with Corriere that the decision only applies to the specific call in question. He emphasized that all existing agreements with Israeli universities, which are numerous, remain in effect.
The students’ initiative highlights the importance of international academic partnerships and the value they bring to the university community. It also underscores the complexities involved in navigating political considerations while maintaining academic freedom and collaboration.
