Karachi : In general, rape cases are rising alarmingly in recent years which indicate that something is wrong somewhere and we need to build up our accused reports on the grounds of evidence-based arguments. On-campus molestation of a female student from Punjab Group of Colleges (PGC) by the college guard brings forth once again, how even public places are not safe for women. The following protests to this event were harsh, revealing deeper and monolithic patterns of accountability across institutions.
Shockingly, statistics reveal that nearly 6,600 rape cases were reported between 2023 and 2024, with a woman being assaulted approximately every 45 minutes. The case of Lahore-Sialkot Motorway is also a sad testimony that how much the issue of public safety still prevails in this country. Even though laws have changed, the space between law and its application is still huge.
When women don’t feel safe reporting assaults, it is really important to implement policies. And so, without systemic change these reforms are meaningless and women and children in this country continue to be at risk. Institutes, government and the society at large have to show real commitments that they are zero tolerant with respect of gender-based violence.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
