INDIA : Brushing teeth may seem like a simple task, but for one Sri Lankan citizen, it became a matter of life and death. 63-year-old retired government employee Premlal slipped and fell while brushing his teeth in the bathroom, when the toothbrush suddenly broke into two parts, the front part of which got stuck straight in his throat and threatened to stop breathing. According to Premlal, he immediately rushed to the nearest private and then government hospital, but initially the doctors had difficulty finding the broken part of the toothbrush. Within an hour, his condition started deteriorating, his throat started closing up and he started coughing up blood, after which an X-ray and CT scan revealed that the part of the brush was still inside. Later, Premlal was shifted to the government hospital in Galle city where a complex operation was performed under the supervision of ear, nose and throat specialists. According to the doctors, the piece of brush had lodged near a major artery, injuring the throat, which was a very dangerous situation. After several hours of struggle, the surgery was successful and the piece of brush was removed. After about a week of treatment, Premlal returned home and is now feeling completely well. He said that this incident is a warning to everyone that even simple daily tasks can be fatal if done carelessly. He advised people to prioritize caution in all situations, because a moment’s slip can change their entire lives.
