Chairman of the Consumers Association of Pakistan (CAP), Kaukab Iqbal, has welcomed the action taken by the District Administration South in sealing Hashoo Center and Electric Market due to serious fire safety violations. He stated that such firm and timely measures are essential to safeguard precious human lives and property.
Kaukab Iqbal emphasized that comprehensive fire safety arrangements must be ensured in every market, shopping center, and mall across Karachi and Sindh. He made it clear that negligence in fire safety poses a serious threat to both shopkeepers and consumers, particularly in commercial buildings where hundreds of shops operate under one roof.
Referring to the upcoming Eid shopping season, he said that the issue becomes even more critical as markets experience a massive increase in customer turnout. The Chairman CAP urged the Government of Sindh to officially publish and regularly update the list of markets and shopping malls that have obtained fire safety clearance certificates, so consumers can make informed decisions and choose to shop only at safe and approved locations. This step will also create pressure on non-compliant markets to meet mandatory fire safety standards.
He further stressed that staff working in markets and shopping malls should receive proper fire safety training, including the use of fire extinguishers, emergency evacuation procedures, and basic first-response measures. Trained staff can save valuable lives before emergency services arrive.
Kaukab Iqbal also appealed to the Chief Minister Sindh to immediately upgrade the Civil Defense Department by providing modern buildings, advanced equipment, and trained and qualified personnel, enabling the department to effectively address growing urban safety challenges. He emphasized that the role of Civil Defense must be practical, active, and visible.
Additionally, he called for regular fire safety training programs for schools, colleges, universities, and especially factory staff, noting that educational institutions and industrial units are highly vulnerable in the event of fire incidents. Timely awareness and training can significantly reduce casualties and material losses.
The Chairman CAP also highlighted the urgent need to equip Fire Brigade personnel with modern fire-fighting equipment, protective gear, and proper uniforms, allowing them to perform their duties safely and efficiently. He demanded that, considering Karachi’s rapidly increasing population, the government should establish a minimum of two to five fully functional fire stations in each district.
In conclusion, Kaukab Iqbal stated that fire safety is not an option but a fundamental necessity, and that strict enforcement of laws, public awareness, and institutional preparedness are the only effective ways to prevent major tragedies in the future.
