Additional Inspector General of Police (Karachi Range) Javed Alam Odho has said that the Safe City Project is progressing well and 50% area of Karachi city will be covered in a year while entire Karachi will be covered in two years. He has also announced to start a Volunteer Internship Program in SITE Police Station-B where workers of large factories will be given the opportunity to get knowledge of FIR system, People Verification, Roznamcha etc., as part of sharing information with the general public under community policing.
He was addressing members of SITE Association of Industry on the occasion of his visit. He was accompanied by high officials of his department namely Sharjil Karim Kharal (DIG south), Ahmed Nawaz (DIG Traffic), Fida Hussain Janwari (SSP Keamari), Noorul Haq Rind (SSP Traffic West), Ghulam Nabi Keiro (SSP Traffic South), Capt.(R) Faizan Ali (SP Baldia) and others. SVP Saud Mahmood, members Khalid Riaz, Naveed Wahid, Muhammad Hussain Moosani, Haris Shakoor and others were also present on this occasion.
Javed Alam Odho said that the Police department is making efforts to provide such an atmosphere where the general public will not need the services of security guards. In response to the issue of encroachments in SITE area as highlighted by SITE President Abdul Rasheed, he said that it is the responsibility of concerned SHOs to keep a vigilant eye on encroachments, illegal weapons and narcotics and take every possible step to stop them.
AIGP further said that the bad economic situation is the reason behind increasing crimes. Industries should give employment to more & more people. He issued orders to provide some more police personnel to SITE Crime Monitoring Cell to improve its sanctioned strength and remarked that Businessmen and industrialists are true partners of police in controlling crimes. Javed Alam announced to make Metroville Picket of SITE area functional with immediate effect.
Patron-in-Chief Zubair Motiwala, speaking on this occasion, appreciated the performance of Karachi police and quoted that upon approaching Rangers, we are told that Police is performing well so contact them. He requested the AIGP to depute police personnel on the vacant pickets in SITE Area and drew his attention towards police reforms which are pending since long stating that it is high time to bring these reforms.
Motiwala further said that SITE Association of Industry is running its Command & Control Centre by hiring more than 50 guards, bearing huge expenses which is not the job of the Association and requested the AIGP to take over the system from police personnel. He said that the police department has arrangements to support Shaheed personnel families but not for the injured personnel which should also be looked into.
Earlier, President SITE Association of Industry Abdul Rasheed, while welcoming the Chief guest, gave a brief introduction of SITE area and highlighted law & order related issues, particularly mentioning the increasing crimes & encroachments like truck stands and dhabas, in SITE area and traffic blockage at Nazimabad. He also requested to provide sanctioned strength to SITE Crime Monitoring Cell which presently stands at 39 instead of 60. Abdul Rasheed stressed the need to depute an SP level officer in SITE area and to have fortnightly meetings with Police to keep close liaison.
Abdul Hadi, Chairman of Law & Order Sub-Committee, while apprising the AIGP about law & order issues of the area, said that there is need to change perception and police working should be based on pre-incident instead of post-incident. Industrial areas should be a priority for police and SITE Police Station-B should be made a Model Police Station. He stressed the need to check Investigation Officers which are working since many years and demanded to depute an SP in SITE area and give CCTV cameras recording access to the Association to help in apprehending culprits speedily. Abdul Hadi suggested that police should send a follow up report of the monthly crime report sent by the Association and requested to start a grand anti-encroachment campaign in the area.
Younus Bashir, former president, said that the issue of encroachments has become severe in SITE area and added that even a tyre puncture shop is set up under the patronage of high government. officials. He expressed the wish that SITE will be a peaceful area soon and appreciated the performance of area traffic police.
