Karachi : The alarming rise in traffic accidents in Karachi has become both a severe public safety and
human rights issue. Reckless driving, inadequate infrastructure, and lax enforcement of traffic
laws are leading to daily tragedies, affecting vulnerable groups like pedestrians and motorcyclists the most. This situation demands immediate action from authorities to enhance road safety, enforce stricter regulations, and protect every citizen’s right to a safe and livable environment. The recent accident on Karsaz Road involving a speeding vehicle, which tragically claimed two lives, underscores the critical need for stringent measures to ensure road safety. Investigations have revealed that reckless driving and substance abuse played a role in this devastating event, highlighting the urgency for better enforcement of traffic laws. Karachi witnesses hundreds of traffic-related injuries daily, with motorcyclists being particularly vulnerable. Reports indicate that around 500 people are injured in road accidents every day, and more than 1,400 lives were lost in 2023 alone. This continuous loss of life on the roads reflects a broader issue of negligence, lack of awareness, and inadequate infrastructure to manage the growing number of vehicles. Other recent accidents, including a bus crash that left two people dead and several others critically injured, further emphasize the need for better traffic management. Speeding, poor
vehicle maintenance, and unregulated public transport contribute to the high accident rates. These preventable incidents persist, causing needless suffering to victims and their families. Karachi’s roads must be made safer through stricter law enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and improved infrastructure. Ensuring that drivers adhere to speed limits, undergo proper training, and avoid substance abuse is essential in protecting the rights of all citizens to travel safely.  The rise in traffic accidents violates basic human rights, demanding urgent action to prevent further tragedies.
