Islamabad: In a significant departure from past practices, Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, has approved a new merit-based appointment process for law officers in the province. This move comes as part of a broader effort to streamline government operations and ensure the efficient use of public funds.
Under the new system, a committee has been established to evaluate the performance of current law officers and assess their competence and effectiveness. The committee will also be responsible for evaluating new appointments based on merit.
The decision to implement a merit-based appointment process follows a reduction in the total number of law officers in Punjab from 98 to 66. This reduction was made to optimize the allocation of resources and safeguard the public treasury.
Speaking on the decision, a senior government official stated, “The government is committed to ensuring that appointments to key positions are made based on merit, rather than political considerations. This will help improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of government operations.”
The move has been welcomed by legal experts and the public alike, who see it as a positive step towards improving governance and transparency in Punjab. The government’s decision to prioritize merit-based appointments reflects a broader commitment to reform and modernization in the province.
