ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Pakistan have issued a nationwide alert warning of an intense heatwave and potential of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) over the coming days, as temperatures are expected to rise significantly above normal.

According to an advisory by PDMA Punjab, a severe heatwave is likely to affect southern and central regions from May 7 to 11, while upper parts of the country may experience extreme heat between May 8 and 10. Temperatures in several areas are expected to remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department and National Disaster Management Authority have also issued alerts to all relevant departments, urging preparedness to handle emergency situations.

In Punjab, temperatures are forecast to range between 39°C and 43°C in cities such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad. Southern districts including Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan could witness temperatures soaring between 43°C and 47°C.

Similarly, parts of upper Sindh and Balochistan may see temperatures reaching as high as 46°C to 50°C in cities like Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Turbat.

Authorities have warned that rising temperatures could accelerate glacier melting in northern regions, increasing the risk of sudden flooding due to glacial lake outbursts, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed has directed local administrations to implement precautionary measures. Hospitals, basic health units, and emergency services, including Rescue 1122, have been placed on high alert to respond to heatstroke and dehydration cases.

Citizens—especially children, elderly individuals, and those with health conditions—have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and cover their heads when outside.

Authorities are also setting up relief camps in urban areas, ensuring the availability of clean drinking water, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and first aid. Mobile health teams have been mobilized to assist affected populations.

Farmers have been instructed to take preventive steps to protect crops and livestock from extreme heat conditions.

The advisory highlights the urgent need for public awareness and preparedness as Pakistan braces for one of the season’s most intense heatwaves.
