ISLAMABAD ( February 24, 2026): Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Waqar Mehdi has voiced grave concern over the alarming deterioration of federally controlled highways in Sindh and the rising number of accidents caused by their unsafe condition. He demanded the immediate rehabilitation of the Karachi–Sukkur Super Highway and the expeditious completion of the long-delayed Jamshoro–Sehwan Indus Highway project, which has remained unfinished since 2017.
Raising the issue on a point of order during Tuesday’s Senate session, Senator Waqar Mehdi—who also serves as the General Secretary of PPP Sindh chapter—said that the Super Highway and National Highway in Sindh, both under federal jurisdiction, are in an appalling state. He pointed out that the Karachi–Hyderabad Super Highway has been intermittently closed for months under the pretext of repairs, with traffic diverted onto unsafe, unpaved tracks. The absence of proper traffic management during these diversions, he said, has resulted in frequent and tragic accidents. He added that the Hyderabad–Sukkur stretch is severely damaged at multiple locations, posing serious risks to commuters.
He criticized the Motorway Police for focusing primarily on issuing challans rather than ensuring effective traffic regulation and public safety.
Senator Waqar Mehdi said that although the Government of Sindh has already released its financial share for the Jamshoro–Sehwan dual carriageway, the federal government has yet to allocate the remaining funds, causing unjustified delays. Criticizing the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the federal authorities, he questioned why Sindh continues to face what appears to be discriminatory neglect. He urged the federal government to prioritize the rehabilitation and completion of highways and other development projects under its control in Sindh and to clearly inform the public when the long-awaited Hyderabad–Sukkur Motorway project will finally be initiated.
