ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has emerged as the largest importer of solar panels in the world in 2024, according to a report released by the British energy think tank Amber.
The report states that Pakistan imported a staggering 17 gigawatts (GW) worth of solar panels this year — more than any other country globally.
What makes this surge unique, the report notes, is that it wasn’t driven by any major international investment, national government initiative, or large-scale project. Instead, the growth was fueled by individual consumers, small businesses, and commercial entities seeking affordable and reliable alternatives to the country’s costly and inconsistent power supply.
Experts estimate that the volume of solar imports in 2024 could potentially cover almost half of Pakistan’s total electricity demand, underscoring a significant shift toward decentralized and consumer-driven energy solutions.
Due to ongoing load-shedding and rising electricity tariffs, many citizens are turning to rooftop solar systems to ensure uninterrupted and cost-effective energy for their homes and businesses.
