KARACHI – Ismail Suttar, Chairman, Salt Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (SMAP) urges the government of Pakistan to provide support to increase its salt exports tothe markets supplied by China and India as there are no stocks in either of the salt producing country due to first a cyclone in India and then above average monsoon rains.
Covid-19 Lockdown and excessive rainfall have severely hit salt production in Gujarat city in India and Zhengzhou city in China. Most people in these areas are turning up to black market that are offering salt at exorbitant prices.
“Pakistan has good reserves in the salt lakes due to low monsoon rains this year in the region around the salt lakes. With the help of the government, it can provide instant support to neighboring countries China and India as well as their customers like Vietnam and South Korea during this difficult period”, said Ismail Suttar.
He further said “Quick support to India and China can provide employment opportunities to millennials and generation Z Pakistani’s that are severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, Pakistan has great potential to not only close the gap between imports and exports but pay off the debt that they owe. The only help needed is the priority availability for vessel space as well as containers for shipping the salt.
