Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif attended the stone-laying ceremony as the chief guest.

Nestlé Pakistan’s leadership, including Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Jason Avanceña, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Sheikh Waqar Ahmad, and Head of Technical Faisal Nadeem, also participated in the event.

The project supports Nestlé’s global target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

$4.5 Million Renewable Energy Project

Nestlé Pakistan is investing $4.5 million in the Biomass Steam Plant.

The project also forms part of the company’s PKR 17 billion (around $60 million) investment commitment for Pakistan during 2026–2028, announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Once operational, the plant will generate 30 tonnes of steam per hour by using agricultural waste instead of conventional fossil fuels.

Project Aims to Cut Carbon Emissions

Speaking at the ceremony, Maryam Nawaz said the project reflects Punjab’s commitment to environmental protection, cleaner air and sustainable industrial growth.

She added that renewable energy initiatives and circular economy projects will help Pakistan address climate challenges while encouraging responsible industrial practices.

Jason Avanceña said the plant will consume nearly 72,000 tonnes of agricultural residue each year and reduce approximately 24,345 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

He added that the facility is also expected to save around $2.15 million in fuel costs every year.

Supporting Pakistan’s Clean Energy Goals

Sheikh Waqar Ahmad said the project will reduce dependence on fossil fuels while promoting the productive use of agricultural residue.

He added that the initiative demonstrates the importance of public-private partnerships in strengthening industrial competitiveness and advancing environmental sustainability.

According to the company, the project also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on affordable clean energy and climate action.
