ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a clarification regarding its role in the issuance of birth, death, and marriage records, emphasizing that these registrations are the responsibility of Union Councils under provincial laws.
The statement comes in response to a viral social media video, in which a person claimed to have been wrongly declared deceased at a NADRA office.
NADRA explained that the death registration had been carried out by a close relative at the relevant Union Council, which is authorized to maintain records of births, deaths, and changes in marital status. NADRA then issues identity documents based on these records, in accordance with federal laws.
The authority noted that over 7 million death entries have been registered across Union Councils nationwide. However, in many cases, family members have not updated NADRA records or canceled the deceased’s identity cards.
To address this, NADRA has sent text notifications to such individuals and their relatives, urging them to visit the nearest NADRA office to cancel ID cards if the death registration is valid. In case of incorrect entries, affected persons have been advised to contact the concerned Union Council to update the records.
