Karachi – Members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Farhan Chishti, Member of National Assembly, and Taha Ahmed, Member of Provincial Assembly, have embarked on an inspection tour of rainwater drainage systems across various localities in District Central, Karachi.
The initiative arises amidst growing concerns over urban flooding and inefficient drainage that have plagued the city during the monsoon season. The two lawmakers are scrutinizing the existing infrastructure to address and preempt the perennial water-logging issues that severely impact traffic flow and daily activities of the residents.
During their visit, MNA Farhan Chishti remarked, “Effective management of rainwater is crucial for preventing the recurrent urban flooding in Karachi. We are here to ensure that all the systems are operational before the next rains hit our city.” MPA Taha Ahmed added, “Our goal is to identify the bottlenecks in the current system and work on a comprehensive plan to enhance our drainage capacity.”
The tour included areas that are notoriously affected by heavy rains, with the leaders interacting with local communities to gather firsthand accounts of the challenges they face during the rainy season. The feedback will be integral to developing a more robust and efficient drainage system.
Both representatives have pledged to prioritize this issue in their agendas and collaborate with local government bodies to implement necessary upgrades and maintenance routines. The findings from this inspection will also be raised in the upcoming sessions of both the National and Provincial Assemblies to secure support and funding for an extensive overhaul of the rainwater management infrastructure in Karachi.
Residents of District Central have expressed cautious optimism about these developments, hoping for tangible improvements that will alleviate the hardships experienced during the monsoon.
The MQM leaders plan to continue their inspections across other districts of Karachi to comprehensively address the city’s drainage problems.
