Karachi: Karachi is undergoing a major change in property tax management. Local government bodies will now handle property tax collection, shifting this responsibility from the provincial Excise and Taxation Department. This move aims to make the process more efficient and closer to the community.
A three-month transition period will begin soon. During this time, local authorities will receive training and support to manage tax records and integrate new systems. The Sindh government will assist to ensure a smooth shift without disrupting services.
This change is also set to expand to Hyderabad’s districts in the future. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon stated that the goal is to empower local governments to manage their revenues better and enhance service delivery.
For residents, this means potentially more responsive tax management and greater transparency. However, local bodies will need to build their capacity to handle these new duties effectively. The Sindh government has pledged ongoing support to address these challenges and ensure the transition is successful.
