Karachi is set to receive its first monsoon spell of the season starting Friday, with rain and thunderstorms expected to last through Sunday.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a low-pressure system currently situated over Indian Gujarat is influencing the weather across Sindh, bringing moisture-laden winds and unstable conditions.
Meteorologist Anjum Nazir stated that rainfall may commence by Friday evening, with Saturday expected to see the most intense downpours. Prolonged rain on Saturday could lead to urban flooding in Karachi, while lighter, scattered showers may continue on Sunday.
The same weather system is also likely to bring heavy rains to other parts of Sindh, posing similar risks of urban flooding.
In the northern region, including Islamabad and Rawalpindi, heavy monsoon rains hit various areas on Thursday. As a result, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) declared a rain emergency, deploying emergency teams and heavy machinery to flood-prone spots like Committee Chowk underpass and Murree Road.
Rainfall figures included 35mm in Bokra, 33mm in Pirwadhai, 31mm in Saidpur, and 23mm in Golra. With the monsoon system spreading across large parts of the country, concerns about potential flooding in major urban areas are growing.
