Stockholm, October 24 : The delicate balance between human progress and planetary health took center stage at a seminar hosted by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, where Pedro Conceição, Director of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO), led a thought-provoking discussion on reconciling human well-being with environmental sustainability.
The session examined whether advancing human development inevitably places strain on the planet — and how global frameworks can evolve to address this dual challenge.
Key insights from the seminar underscored that traditional measures of progress, such as GDP, are no longer sufficient in capturing true human advancement. Experts emphasized the urgent need for new metrics that integrate environmental sustainability into the development equation.
Among the innovations discussed were the Planetary Pressures–Adjusted Human Development Index (PHDI) and the emerging Nature Relationship Index (NRI) — both designed to align human prosperity with ecological balance.

The seminar called for a rethinking of progress, urging policymakers and researchers to pursue models that ensure human flourishing within planetary boundaries, shaping the direction for the forthcoming Human Development Report 2026 (HDR2026).
The event also showcased the UNDP’s “Human Climate Horizons” platform, which provides data-driven insights into the intersection of human and climate development. The platform will release new global data on November 5, offering fresh perspectives on the future of sustainable growth.
