Karachi: AKU’s Medical College hosted the International Student Research Conference, bringing together over 1,000 students from 30 universities. The event, themed “Assembling Today’s Brightest for Tomorrow’s Breakthroughs,” offered two days of dynamic learning, including scientific sessions, journal clubs, poster presentations, and networking with professors.
Dr. Hasan Badre Alam from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine delivered an inspiring keynote. He urged students to set clear long-term goals and focus on significant problems in surgery they are passionate about.
The conference provided a vibrant space for students to connect, share ideas, and explore potential collaborations. Dr. Sohail Khan, CEO of Aria Institute of Medical Sciences and an AKU alumnus, shared his experience founding a hospital and research institute in Quetta, stressing the importance of visionary leadership.
Participants attended sessions tailored to all expertise levels, from beginners to experts. Journal Clubs, similar to book clubs, allowed students to discuss topics like bioinformatics, public health, and women’s health with faculty.
Dr. Russell Martins of Hackensack Meridian Health encouraged students to recognize the impact of their research. The session on “Overcoming Inequities in Women’s Health” highlighted the need to address broader issues beyond maternal care.
Dr. Fyezah Jehan discussed how research influences policy, announcing that the HPV vaccine will soon be available in schools across Sindh and Punjab, thanks to AKU’s efforts.
The conference demonstrated a commitment to innovation and collaboration, providing students with valuable opportunities to advance medical research and practice.
