During a recent visit to Karachi, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), commended Pakistan for its maritime sector and environmental initiatives. At the International Maritime Sustainability Exhibition and Conference (IMSEC), Dominguez toured the Oil Pipeline Terminal 2 and South Asia Pakistan Terminals Limited (SAPT), praising the progress in port digitization and operations.
He also visited the KPT Hospital and Port House, where he planted mangrove saplings, underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Dominguez praised the country’s adherence to IMO regulations and the Hong Kong Convention on shipbreaking, highlighting its strategic location and impressive port facilities. He encouraged other nations to follow Pakistan’s lead in protecting the environment.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh, who hosted Dominguez, highlighted Pakistan’s economic recovery, with increased exports and remittances. Shaikh also detailed the government’s plans to boost trade through Gwadar Port and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to addressing climate change, despite its low contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.
