Islamabad: The federal government’s plan to pass new constitutional amendments has faced major difficulties. Recently, efforts to advance these changes were met with strong opposition, leading to delays and complications.
Key opposition figure, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who has only five Senate votes, is crucial for the amendments to move forward. The government’s attempts to win his support, including calling meetings, have not succeeded. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) still aims to push these changes through within the next fifteen days and may offer two Senate seats to Rehman’s party as part of the deal.
Opposition leaders and former Prime Minister Imran Khan have criticized the proposed changes. Khan, currently in jail, claims that the amendments are an attempt to weaken the judiciary and are harmful to the country’s future.
The proposed changes include altering how judges are appointed and creating a new Federal Constitutional Court. However, the process has been postponed indefinitely after unsuccessful negotiations with key political figures.
