KARACHI, September 6, 2026: A Defence Day event at Iqra University in Karachi paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces and national heroes.
The event also urged young people to contribute to the country’s development through education, skills and responsible citizenship.
Organised by the Sindh government’s Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, the programme marked September 6 and commemorated the 1965 war between Pakistan and India.
Speakers recalled the events of the conflict and highlighted the role of the armed forces. They also remembered those who lost their lives while defending the country.
Retired Officers Discuss 1965 War
A panel discussion brought together several retired military officers. The speakers included Vice Admiral Shah Sohail Masood, Air Vice Marshal Usaid-ur-Rehman Usmani and Brigadier Syed Karrar Hussain Shah.

Colonel Mukhtar Butt, Squadron Leader Nafees Ahmed Rabbani and Commander Dr Muhammad Tahir also joined the discussion.
The panellists examined the historical context of the 1965 war. In addition, they discussed the contribution of Pakistan’s armed forces during the conflict.
The officers also encouraged students to take a constructive role in the country’s future.
PID Director General Pays Tribute
Director General of the Press Information Department Iram Tanveer attended the programme as guest of honour.
She paid tribute to the soldiers and other personnel who lost their lives in the defence of Pakistan.
Her participation also highlighted the role of national institutions in remembering the sacrifices associated with Defence Day.
Youth Urged to Support National Development
Sindh Secretary for Sports and Youth Affairs Munawar Ali Mahesar said Defence Day represents more than a historical commemoration.
He described the day as a reminder of national unity, sacrifice, determination and patriotism.
Meanwhile, Mahesar urged young people to contribute to national development. He stressed the importance of education, skills and responsible conduct.
According to him, the younger generation can play an important role in strengthening Pakistan’s future.
Department Highlights Role of Youth
Additional Secretary Dr Asad Ishaq also addressed the gathering.
Syed Habibullah, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Youth Affairs Sindh, said the department uses national commemorations to connect young people with Pakistan’s history.
He added that such events help students understand the sacrifices linked to the country’s creation and defence.
Therefore, the programme combined historical remembrance with a message focused on youth participation and national development.
Students Receive Certificates
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates to participating students.
Organisers also presented commemorative shields to speakers and other participants.
The organisers said the programme aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of national history. At the same time, it encouraged them to become responsible and active citizens.
Through such activities, the Sindh government’s youth affairs department seeks to connect national commemorations with education, civic responsibility and the future role of young Pakistanis.
