Karachi Pakistan – Commissioner Karachi should take legal action against wholesalers, dairy farmers and retailers who sell expensive milk to consumers at arbitrary rates. The rate of fresh milk fixed by the government is Rs. 180 while the consumer is being charged extra Rs 30 per liter. This was said by Kaukab Iqbal, Chairman of Consumers Association of Pakistan, while talking to media representatives at the CAP head office. He said that 70,000 liters of fresh milk is sold in Karachi every day, which means that 21 crore liters milk is sold in Karachi every month. The increase of Rs.30 is putting a burden of Rs.6 billion and 30 crores on the pocket of the consumers. Why are the milk sellers given free rein to increase the prices of fresh milk every month? Chairman of Consumers Association of Pakistan Kaukab Iqbal said that the government has reduced the prices of petroleum in recent days but instead of reducing the prices, more burden has been placed on the consumers. He said that Sindh Food Authority’s job is to check the fresh milk sold in the city to see if it is pure, but unfortunately, Sindh Food Authority’s performance is zero. The Punjab Food Authority periodically checks the rates of open milk and if the milk is adulterated or substandard, it is dumped into the drains. But contrary to that, especially in Karachi and Sindh, such action is not seen. Kaukab Iqbal added that the milk sellers are not only selling expensive milk to the consumers, but some milk sellers also cheat in the measurement. Instead of a liter, they give milk in Seer and receive money per liter. He said that the department of the Bureau of Supply has also become inactive, while recently the Director General has also taken charge, but the performance of the department is still not up to the expectations. Kaukab Iqbal demanded the Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to immediately form an inquiry committee on the arbitrary increase in the prices of fresh milk to find out into whose pocketsRs.6 billion and 30 crores goes. Why not take action against the vendors? He said that fresh milk is the need of every household, it is an important nutrition for children and especially for the elderly. Along with ensuring the sale of milk on government set prices, the sale of pure milk should also be ensured.
