Some people have been criticizing and blaming Imran Khan for not being able to deliver promises he made prior to coming to power. I agree that he did not fulfill all the promises but do understand at least some of the reasons, why. Here is my take which is simply expressed by my personal views and without any prejudices as I am not affiliated with any political party in Pakistan or in Canada.
First of all running a country or even an organization is not a solo flight. So one person cannot be credited or blamed for his performance for carrying the weight alone on his shoulder. We all know that governing Pakistan is like governing the ungovernables as it is not a homogenous society, but a diverse country of different ethnicity, religions, culture, old traditions and poor economy. Pakistan is also located in a rough neighbourhood surrounded by unfriendly neighbours which I may describe as Harlem of South Asia.
So let us now analyze Imran Khan’s role as PM. I think we all should give credit to him that he is an honest man which a leader must be. Does he possess the leadership quality and is he ambitious enough to deliver? I think he is. Is he perfect? NO, but against all odds, he did deliver the World Cup, built Shaukat Khanum Hospital and also a University in Mianwali. He is an Oxford graduate and has tremendous PR capabilities due to his charismatic personality. He is also popular with World Leaders and has enhanced Pakistan’s image abroad. The question is then, why has he not yet delivered so many promises? The answer is quite simple; he can only play the hand he is dealt with. He had no choice but to pick his team from those politicians elected by the people, some of whom are not very capable. The opposition would not let him choose competent people from abroad.
On a day to day basis, Imran must be facing many challenges on various fronts including dealing with opposition who want him out so they can avoid corruption charges without bringing back the looted wealth. Imran does not want to give them another NRO. With limited resources, economic recession around the world and aggression by India, he has to throw a lot of balls in the air and catch them without dropping them. Moreover, he has to deal with many Ministries some of which I have listed below and which are run by corrupt bureaucrats appointed by the two previous governments. In addition, has to work with his own party Members, Advisors, Senators and Parliamentarians. He even has to keep abreast, without interfering, on the matters of Armed Forces, Judiciary, provincial governments and NAB.
Ministries of Pakistan:
1) Finance 2) Foreign Affairs 3) Homeland security 4) Industry 5) Commerce and Trade 6) Defence
7) Railway 8) Forestry 9) Environment 10) Aviation 11) Transportation 12) Agriculture !3) Food and Drugs 14) Health
15) Education 16) Labour 17) Law and Justice 18) Water !9) Power and Gas 20) Petroleum 21) Science and Technology )
22) Religious Affairs 23) Narcotics) 24) Planning 25 )Privatization 26) IT and Telecom 27) Heritage and Culture 28) Kashmir Affair
29) Communication 30) Housing 31) Sports 32) Employment 33) Information and Broadcasting 34) Human resources 35) Inter Provincial Relations.
There may be even more Ministries which I can’t think of at the moment. There are many departments under each Ministry for which Prime Ministry is also briefed regularly. If you have managed a big corporation with many departments which I have, you will appreciate the challenges this man must be going through. And remember, his role is not that of a Fire Fighter to put out fire, he is there to build a country and bring Pakistan in the 21ST Century. Let us wish Imran Khan and hid his team the very best and a lot of success.
