TENNESSEE : A grandmother in the US state of Tennessee spent nearly six months in prison after an artificial intelligence facial recognition software glitch. Police arrested Angela Lips while she was babysitting at her home and booked her into jail as a fugitive in a bank fraud case in North Dakota, even though the elderly woman had never traveled to the state. The investigation revealed that facial recognition software used to identify a female suspect in a bank fraud case mistakenly identified Angela Lips as a suspect, and police arrested her based solely on the software’s identification. In December 2025, the court dropped the charges against her, and her lawyers are considering civil rights litigation. Angela says she’s glad it’s all over.
