KARACHI: Actor and artist Naimal Khawar has spoken out against public commentary about women’s bodies after an Instagram post speculated about changes in her appearance.

Khawar shared a post on Saturday that described her as “unrecognisable” at a wedding and questioned whether she was pregnant or had gained weight. She responded by challenging the growing tendency to publicly discuss women’s bodies.

“It’s honestly fascinating and sad how comfortable people have become commenting on a woman’s body,” Khawar said in her Instagram story.

The actor acknowledged that her appearance has changed over the years. She said weight can fluctuate and that she does not look the same as she did five years ago.

Khawar, who is married to actor Hamza Ali Abbasi, also pointed to the impact of motherhood and other changes that women experience throughout their lives.

She said women’s bodies can change because of age, hormones, stress, health and lifestyle. Pregnancy can also bring significant physical changes, she added.

According to Khawar, none of these changes should give the public a reason to comment on a woman’s appearance.

“Your body is allowed to change without becoming a topic of entertainment,” she wrote.

The actor also addressed women directly, saying they do not owe anyone the same body they had five years ago, last year or even the previous month.

A Wider Debate Around Celebrity Scrutiny

The discussion surrounding Naimal Khawar reflects a broader issue in Pakistan’s entertainment industry. Female celebrities frequently face public comments about their weight, facial features, clothing and hairstyles.

Speculation about pregnancy and cosmetic procedures has also become common on entertainment pages and social media platforms.

However, such scrutiny is not applied equally to male celebrities. Women in the public eye often face significantly greater pressure to maintain a particular appearance.

Khawar has previously spoken publicly about motherhood and the emotional challenges she experienced after giving birth to her son in 2020. She has also discussed how postpartum blues affected her ability to paint for several years.

Her latest comments have therefore renewed the conversation around body image, privacy and the expectations placed on women in the public eye.

Khawar’s message was ultimately simple: changes in a woman’s body do not amount to an invitation for public judgment.
