Electric Landscaping Tools Gain Ground as Cities Push to Cut Noise and Pollution
Electric landscaping equipment is emerging as a quieter and cleaner alternative to petrol-powered garden tools, although cost, battery life and performance remain major challenges for professional users.

Across southern California, the familiar roar of petrol-powered lawn equipment is becoming increasingly controversial. Cities across the United States are introducing restrictions on petrol landscaping tools or encouraging workers to switch to electric alternatives.
The change aims to reduce noise, carbon emissions and pollution. Electric equipment can also allow landscapers to work for longer hours because it creates less disturbance for nearby residents.
Electric tools offer a quieter alternative
The shift is gaining support from organisations such as the American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA), which promotes the use of electric landscaping equipment.
Electric backpack leaf blowers can now deliver enough power for many everyday jobs. They are also generally quieter than petrol models. The sound remains noticeable, but users describe it as a softer, higher-pitched buzz.

The growing market has also attracted new technology companies. US aerospace start-up Whisper Aero, which develops electric propulsion systems for aircraft, has adapted its technology for landscaping equipment.
The company began developing an electric leaf blower after researching quieter air-moving technology. Its blower can operate for up to 15 minutes at full power.
Whisper Aero has also started taking online pre-orders for its handheld model. However, the machine sits at the higher end of the electric leaf blower market.
Professional landscapers face limitations
Despite the advances, petrol-powered equipment remains popular among professional landscapers.
Petrol blowers generally deliver greater power and can complete heavy-duty jobs faster. Battery runtime also remains a major concern for workers who operate equipment for long periods.
Some landscaping companies use electric tools where local regulations require them. However, many continue using petrol equipment where restrictions do not apply.
Battery charging can create another challenge. Some professional crews need several batteries to keep equipment running throughout the working day. Each battery can also take significant time to recharge.
The initial investment presents another obstacle. One landscaper estimated that converting an entire business to electric equipment could cost about $10,000.
Major manufacturers invest in battery technology
Nevertheless, major power-tool manufacturers are increasing their investment in battery-powered equipment.
German manufacturer Stihl wants battery-powered products to account for 80% of its sales by 2035. The company has also invested in dedicated battery and tool production.
New battery technology could help address some of the industry’s concerns. Stihl says its latest high-performance batteries use tabless lithium cells. The company says these cells can deliver significantly higher peak power than conventional designs.
For landscapers, better batteries could mean fewer replacements, shorter charging times and lighter equipment.
The transition will not happen overnight. Petrol machines still offer advantages in power, runtime and upfront practicality.
However, growing pressure from cities, improvements in battery technology and rising demand for quieter working environments could accelerate the move towards electric landscaping equipment.
