An Indian court has sentenced Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison after overturning his 2021 acquittal in a high-profile rape case involving a former colleague
The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court convicted the former Tehelka editor under provisions of Indian law relating to rape and sexual harassment. The court also imposed fines exceeding 1 million Indian rupees (around $10,500).
Tarun Tejpal, who has consistently denied the allegations, told the court before sentencing that he would challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court of India.

Background of the 2013 Sexual Assault Case Against Tarun Tejpal
The case dates back to November 2013, when a former female colleague accused Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a lift during Tehelka’s annual conference in Goa. The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Hollywood actor Robert De Niro.
The allegations emerged at a time when India was witnessing heightened public debate over sexual violence following the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, which prompted major legal reforms.
After the accusations surfaced, Tejpal initially described the incident as “a lapse of judgement” and “a misreading of the situation” before later insisting that CCTV footage would reveal the truth. He also alleged the prosecution was politically motivated.
High Court Overturns 2021 Acquittal
Tejpal was arrested in 2013 and spent seven months in custody before being granted bail. In 2021, a Goa sessions court acquitted him, but the ruling sparked widespread criticism after the judge questioned the complainant’s behaviour following the alleged assault.
The Goa government appealed the acquittal, arguing that the trial court had failed to properly evaluate the evidence. During the appeal, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urged the court to impose the maximum sentence, stating that the judgment should reinforce the principle that “when a woman says no, it means no.”
The High Court ultimately found Tarun Tejpal guilty under provisions covering rape committed by a person in a position of trust or authority, bringing one of India’s most closely watched sexual assault cases to a new legal milestone.
