US military launches large-scale strikes on Iranian military targets following missile attacks.

WASHINGTON: US-Iran tensions intensified sharply after the US military launched what it described as a “heavy wave” of airstrikes against targets in Iran, responding to attempted Iranian ballistic missile attacks on American forces stationed in the Middle East.

According to the US Central Command (Centcom), the strikes targeted dozens of facilities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including military command centres, missile and drone installations, coastal defence positions and maritime assets. The operation followed Iran’s attempted missile attacks on US bases in Jordan and incidents involving commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

More than 100 words into the latest developments, US-Iran relations remain at their most volatile in months, with both sides exchanging military action despite recent signs of possible diplomatic engagement.

Iran Reports Civilian Casualties

Iranian state media reported that the strikes hit several locations, including Qeshm Island and Abadan, areas that play an important role in the country’s energy sector.

According to Iranian reports, a strike on a residential home in the Chah Tangu area of Qeshm killed three members of the same family, including a two-year-old child. Additional sites in southern and western Iran were also reportedly targeted.

Centcom Details Military Operation

Centcom said the strikes lasted about an hour and described them as a direct response to Iran’s attempted attacks on US forces.

The command stated that all Iranian missiles fired toward US positions were intercepted before reaching their targets.

The US military said the operation focused on military infrastructure associated with the IRGC rather than civilian facilities.

Iran and Jordan Report New Developments

Earlier this week, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for missile attacks on a US military base and command centre in Jordan, describing them as retaliation for previous American military operations.

Jordan’s armed forces later announced that its air defence systems intercepted five Iranian missiles that entered the country’s airspace.

Iran also claimed that its naval forces targeted three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging the vessels had ignored official warnings while passing through the strategic waterway.

Diplomatic Efforts Face Setback

The latest escalation follows several days of relative calm during which both Washington and Tehran had hinted at the possibility of renewed diplomacy.

US President Donald Trump had previously described contacts with Iran as “very friendly negotiations,” although Iranian officials denied that formal talks were taking place.

Meanwhile, Axios reported that Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman conveyed Riyadh’s desire to reduce tensions during a meeting with President Trump. The White House has not publicly commented on the report.

Conflict Continues to Expand

The current confrontation has continued for nearly five months after military action first intensified earlier this year.

In recent days, the United States also announced joint operations with Saudi Arabia targeting Iran-backed groups in Iraq, while Iraqi authorities criticised the strikes as a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

The latest exchanges highlight the growing risk of a wider regional conflict as military operations continue across multiple fronts.
