Those who suffer with muscle weakness; 2 to 5 percent of children and 15 to 30 percent of adults die. 70 percent of the people who are infected do not have any symptoms and others have minor symptoms like fever, sore throat, headache, neck stiffness and pain in arms and legs.
Polio may occur again after the recovery of the previous similar disease.
This disease was first recognized in 1789 by the English physician Michael Underwood and the virus which causes Polio was identified in 1909 by Austrian immunologist Karl Landsteiner. In late 19th century, major outbreaks took place in Europe and the United States. Afterwards in 20th century it became of the most worrying childhood disease in these areas.
In 1950s, Jonas Salk developed the first polio vaccine and after him Albert Sabin developed an oral vaccine. Prevention can be done through Polio Vaccine; however multiple doses are required for it.
Polio virus usually spreads from person to person through infected fecal materials which enter the mouth and may also spread by food or water containing human feces.
