What is Mineralogy? Mineralogy is the study of the process of the formation of minerals, their classification and utilization.
What are Minerals? Mineral is a chemical compound which is having a well-defined chemical composition and a specific crystal structure. It occurs in pure form. Some occur without any crystalline structure for example Opal and Obsidian and are called mineraloids. If a chemical compound occurs naturally with different crystal structures, each structure is considered a different mineral species.
Minerals are used for various needs of human society, such as minerals which are used as ores for essential components of metal products used in various commodities and machinery, essential components to building materials such as limestone, marble, granite, gravel, glass, plaster, cement, etc.
What is Rock? When many of the minerals aggregate, it forms a Rock. Some rocks are also composed of only one mineral such as quartzite and limestone. Some of the minerals are so much abundant than others as they are called rock-forming minerals for example feldspars, micas, amphiboles, olivines etc.
What are Ores? These are minerals which are having a high concentration of a certain element or metal. Ore of Boron, ore of Tin and ore of Zinc are some of the examples of it.
