KARACHI, July 5: Waqar Mehdi, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Sindh and Provincial General Secretary of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh chapter, has declared July 5, 1977, as the darkest day in Pakistan’s history.
In his message commemorating the 47th anniversary of the tragic event, Waqar Mehdi stated that this day reminds us of how General Zia-ul-Haq’s lust for power led him to break the constitution and pave the way for the nation’s downfall. He said that General Zia’s coup against a democratically elected and constitutional government was an assault on Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s vision of a democratic and progressive Pakistan.
Waqar Mehdi expressed that humanity is ashamed of the atrocities committed by General Zia, including the martyrdom of Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, as well as the brutality against Begum Nusrat Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and the countless sacrifices of PPP workers and the nation. He further stated that General Zia’s quest for power involved a conspiracy to inject the poison of sectarianism and ethnicity into Pakistani society.
Waqar Mehdi saluted all those who stood against General Zia’s dictatorship and sacrificed for the cause of democracy on behalf of the PPP Sindh chapter. He emphasized that today is a day to renew our commitment to protecting the Constitution of 1973, democracy, and the rights of the people. He affirmed that we will continue the struggle for which Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and thousands of PPP workers laid down their lives, until its ultimate victory.
