United States Vice President JD Vance has emerged as a key figure in Washington’s efforts to mediate peace with Iran, as the conflict in the region enters its fourth week, according to US media reports on Friday.

Axios reported that Vance has taken a leading role in behind-the-scenes diplomacy, engaging in multiple discussions with Benjamin Netanyahu and coordinating with Gulf allies, while maintaining indirect channels of communication with Iranian officials. The White House sees Vance as a central negotiator due to his senior position and scepticism toward prolonged military interventions, positioning him as a suitable envoy for sensitive talks.
Vance’s efforts have focused on de-escalation, peace negotiations, and regional security coordination with countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. President Donald Trump formally confirmed Vance’s role on Thursday, tasking him with briefing officials and working alongside Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on ongoing negotiations.
A senior White House official told Axios, “If the Iranians can’t strike a deal with Vance, they don’t get a deal. He’s the best they’re gonna get.” While Witkoff and Kushner continue to handle negotiations, Vance is prepared to take on a larger role if talks advance.
Sources added that some Israeli figures attempted to undermine Vance after he questioned overly optimistic expectations about the war during a call with Netanyahu. Despite initial scepticism regarding the war’s goals and duration, Vance supported a strategy of overwhelming force once Trump decided to proceed.
Advisers said Vance remains supportive of Israel but is cautious about divergences between US and Israeli objectives, and he is expected to follow Trump’s direction in pursuing a preferred outcome.
