Resolution calls for transparent elections and investigation into alleged interference.

USA: The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives has unanimously passed a resolution aimed at promoting democracy, transparency, and human rights in Pakistan. The resolution, presented on September 30, 2023, received 50 votes in favor and none against, highlighting bipartisan support for the measure. It has now been sent to the House of Representatives for further consideration and approval.

The resolution focuses on several key demands regarding Pakistan’s electoral process. It emphasizes the importance of transparent elections, the upholding of human rights, and adherence to the rule of law. Additionally, it calls for an investigation into allegations of interference and irregularities during the February 8 elections.

The committee’s decision follows a recent hearing held on March 20, which examined the state of democracy in Pakistan post-elections. During the hearing, American Ambassador Donald Lu provided insights and perspectives on the situation. He addressed allegations suggesting US involvement in the removal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from the office of prime minister, stating that they were baseless and reaffirming respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty.

The resolution urges US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to engage in increased dialogue and cooperation with Pakistani authorities to address these concerns and support democratic principles in the region. It also calls for transparent elections in Pakistan, in line with the aspirations of the people.

The passing of this resolution underscores the United States’ commitment to promoting democracy and human rights globally and signals a continued focus on Pakistan’s democratic development.

This news comes amid ongoing efforts by the US to strengthen its relationship with Pakistan and support the country’s democratic institutions.
