The US Consul General in Karachi Robert Silberstein broke ground on a US-Pakistan Friendship Garden at Clifton Urban Forest on Friday, in celebration of Arbor Day.
The US-Pakistan Friendship Garden was made possible by a $4,000 grant and the efforts of a corps of US diplomats assigned to the US Consulate in Karachi, the press release said.
Located in the heart of Karachi, the addition to the urban forest will be a sustainable symbol of the United States‘ partnership with Pakistan to tackle the climate crisis, it added.
“We are investing in the health and well-being of the Karachi community,” said US Consul General Silberstein.
“Addressing the climate crisis is a team effort and together we can conserve and nurture forests, even in urban areas, to help improve the air we all breathe,” he said.
The US Consul, joined by Sindh Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development Secretary Aslam Ghauri and Acting Consul General of Japan Mr. Ashida Katsunori attended the inauguration of the “US-Pakistan Friendship Garden” in Urban Forest by the invitation from US Consul General Mr. Robert Silberstein. Acting Consul General of Japan Ashida Katsunori is partnering with the Clifton Urban Forest to build on local initiatives to increase the tree cover throughout Karachi.
The trees were planted by the technique called the Miyawaki method that was invented by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. The method can be easily adapted to any soil and climate conditions, and create diverse forest ecosystems much quicker compared to conventional forestry methods.
