Trudeau Rejects Trump’s Proposal for Canada to Become a U.S. State
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has firmly dismissed the notion of Canada joining the United States as a state, despite U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s remarks about potentially leveraging economic pressure against the country.
As reported by Dawn News on Wednesday, Trudeau stated in a post on X: “There is absolutely no chance that Canada would ever become part of the United States. Both nations thrive as each other’s top trading and security partners.”
During a speech at Mar-a-Lago, Trump was asked if he would consider using military action to annex Canada. He responded, “No, economic pressure,” adding that a union between the two countries “would be remarkable.”
Trump has frequently criticized Canada’s trade surplus with the U.S. and recently described the Canada-U.S. border as an artificial construct. He has also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports.
With Canada sending 75% of its exports to the U.S., Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly rebuked Trump’s comments, calling them ignorant of Canada’s strength and resilience. “We will stand firm against any threats,” she asserted.
