Karachi, 8th June 2024: Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Baig Member National Assembly from Karachi in a calling attention notice raised the question in the National Assembly with Minister of State for Power Ali Pervez Malik about the news to cancel the net metering facility to consumers generating power through solar. Net metering is a billing mechanism whereby KE consumers are given credit for the electricity sold to K-Electric through solar generation. Dr. Baig said that the consumers invested a lot of money from their hardened savings as per the given policy and now to scrap this facility will cause severe financial losses to the consumers who invested in solar generation due to K-Electric failure to provide consistent electricity at affordable rates. The Minister for Power assured Dr. Baig that all old agreements for the net metering will continue and honoured. However, for the new agreements policy to be devised in consultation with the stakeholders. Dr. Baig also raised the issue of prolonged load shedding of K-Electric up to 14 hours in some areas in Karachi causing miseries to the consumers.
