At the same time, opposition forces have taken control of the country. This dramatic power shift is being scrutinized in Washington and by those invested in understanding U.S. policies in the Middle East. The implications of these events could have profound and lasting effects on the region, especially amidst the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East, Iran’s regional ambitions, and the war in Gaza.
A Turning Point in Syrian Politics Syria, under the Assad regime, has been a linchpin in the region’s geopolitics for decades. Ruled by the Alawite minority—a branch of Shia Islam—the government has historically resisted the
Sunni Muslim majority, which constitutes approximately 80% of the population. The Assad family, starting with Hafez al-Assad, consolidated power through strong alliances with Iran and significant backing from Russia and China.
